About six weeks ago, Incognita’s Creative Director, Sally McLean made the suggestion to a group of her film industry colleagues that staging a one-off curated festival of short film and web series with all profits going to bushfire relief in Victoria might be a good way for the independent screen sector to give back and help our fellow citizens in the wake of the devastating bushfires our state has been affected by this season.
Less than a week later, a team of eight from Incognita Enterprises, Melbourne WebFest and The Lost Artist were sitting around a table creating what is now known as Shorts Relief: Flicks For The Fires.
Since then, the team have attracted six fabulous Event Partners, secured a venue in the iconic Capitol Theatre Melbourne (who have also waived their venue hire fee to help with costs), negotiated a percentage of bar profits from the day to be donated to the final tally raised by The Mahony Group (who are the caterers at the Capitol), lined up twenty nine award-winning short films and web series to screen on the state-of-the-art big screen at the Capitol, attracted some fantastic Special Guest Presenters (including Michala Banas, Alan Fletcher, Ditch Davey, Christopher Kirby and Toby Truslove), organised a fascinating panel about the power of film for societal change with some fabulous people (to be announced very shortly) as part of the day’s activities and set a date for the event – March 8, 2020.
So in one week’s time, the Capitol Theatre will be buzzing with the most amazing line up of Victorian talent from the short form world, playing to an audience of Victorian filmmakers and members of the general public, as well as some of our well known faces from the big and small screen – all while raising much-needed funds for Wildlife Victoria and the Victorian Bush Fire Appeal.
100% of profits from ticket sales will go to the nominated charities, with all booking fees being donated to the Red Cross Bushfire & Disaster Appeal Fund (Humanitix’s designated bushfire relief charity).
Tickets are available now at https://events.humanitix.com/shorts-relief-flicks-for-the-fires at a cost of $30 Full/$20 Concession – so grab yours before they’re all sold out!
