One of the things I find myself feeling so grateful for in regards to this documentary is the chance to meet and record on tape the diverse group of fascinating, brilliant and inspirational people who have agreed to be a part of this film.  In addition to this, the support and interest from organisations such as Athletics International and Athletics Australia for the project is so very appreciated by all the team.

It was with this in mind that I attended the Athletics International Salute to Australia’s Women Athletes Breakfast at the MCG on Sunday June 16th, 2013 with co-producer and Olympian Marg Woodlock-McLean, who was also a guest speaker at the event.

It was a fantastic morning.  There were several guest speakers – all celebrated women athletes from all Athletics disciplines who spoke of their experiences representing Australia at the elite level of Sport and were inspiring and fascinating to listen to.  This included former South Australian Governor and Olympic Gold Medallist, Marjorie Jackson (pictured above), who spoke of her time as “the Lithgow Flash” (as dubbed by the Australian media), and experiences that led to her becoming the first female Olympic Gold Medallist in Athletics for Australia (Helsinki, 1952).

While the Breakfast was to celebrate Women in Athletics, many prominent male Australian athletes were also present to show their support, including Ray Weinberg (pictured top of page), John Landy and Bob Lay (see below), and it was fascinating to be able to listen during casual conversation to everyone’s stories and memories of their time competing on the world stage.

The addition of a truly interesting photographic slide show, depicting women athletes from the early 1900’s onwards, kept my eyes glued to the screens around us and the conversation at our table with two male athletes who turned out to know Franz Stampfl made for lively and enlightening conversation!

A huge congratulations to Athletics International for staging such a successful event and a thank you for organising a truly interesting and inspiring morning for everyone.  The whole event made me proud to be an Australian and a woman.  An inspirational morning with some fascinating company!

‘Till next time.
